The Sacramento Secretary of State Filing Preclearance and Expedited services are available to people who wish to put in company filings or submit business information to have it pre-cleared within a specified time frame. To use the service, interested parties must visit the Sacramento office in person.

The Sacramento Secretary of State filing services carry a substantial extra fee compared to using the standard, slower filing service which takes an average of 10-15 days. For that additional fee, users get a response within a guaranteed time frame.

Preclearance requests can be submitted using one of four services, with 24-hour, 72-hour, 5-day and 10-day response times available. Those response times are counted in working days. The office is open Monday through Friday, with the exception of state holidays.

Expedited requests can be processed with guaranteed response times of 4 hours, same day, or 24 hours. The 4-hour response time is offered only for business filings where the documents have already been approved using the preclearance service. The same day service does not require the documents to have been cleared in advance, but filings for that service must be submitted before 9.30AM each morning. Filings submitted to the 24 hour service will have a response back the next working day. So, for example, documents submitted on Wednesday at 2PM will have a response available on Thursday by 2PM.

If the filing is not approved, then the response will explain why. The expedite fee is taken whether the filing is approved or not. For this reason, it is important that you prepare your filings carefully, and look them over to make sure that they are complete and error-free to the best of your knowledge. The filing fee (at the time of writing, $70) is chargeable on top of the expedite fee in all cases.
